The talented Alice Cohen can’t stop making these awesome collage-y animated videos.  The above video is for Majical Cloudz (Arbutus Records), for their song “Dream World”.  Alice has also made videos for Coasting, Ducktails, K-Holes, and Big Gold Belt.

You may or may not know that Alice is a long-time musician who’s been in such bands as The Vels, Die Monster Die, and Castles. She’s currently finishing up the tracking portion of her upcoming full-length with some help from Jackie Lin Werner.  While you’re waiting for her next release, check out the video of her song “Memories of Glaciers” from her Walking Up Walls release from Olde English Spelling Bee.

While you’re at it, check out this write-up on the Chocolate Bobka blog about her song and video “Black Pepper”.  Engineer Chris Moore (TV on the Radio, Au Revoir Simone) mixed this record at Headgear a few years back.

LIGHT ASYLUM – Interview

10 Jun

Here’s a clip from an interview with Shannon Funchess of Light Asylum for Imagine Fashion.

You can view the full video here.

Light Asylum is blowing up.  It’s been a long time coming for Shannon.  I remember the first time I heard her sing.  She was with Celena Glenn & The Victory Riot back around late 2002.  Lacy Rae Lancaster Perez (Living Days) was on drums and they were playing a neighborhood dive bar in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Hooper Street at Broadway.  It was the same bar that a year or so prior had crime scene tape around it as someone was mortally wounded just outside of its doors.  On the night of the show, I remember the crowd as small and friendly; both solemn and warm.  In some ways this scene informs Light Asylum’s music…dark and dangerous, brooding and hopeful.   When Shannon sings, you can’t help but be mesmerized and pulled into her world–just listen to the song “Dark Allies” and you’ll understand.

Light Asylum recently signed to Mexican Summer and will release their 12″ EP called “In Tension” in mid-June.  Check out the song “Skull Fuct” as Alex Lipsen did some tracking on this at Headgear.

Experience Headgear’s work all over episode 107 of MTV’s show SKINS, airing Feb. 28, 2011.  We have to give props to our Headgear family on these…

The Skins theme song, “Lina Magic” by 3D Friends (Daniel Chavez-Wright), was tracked at Headgear by producer/engineer Gabe Liberti.  Gabe is a former Headgear intern and assistant who moved out to Portland for a while and is now back in New York City.

Fronted by Jon Lynn, listen for the Unsolved Mysteries song “You Only Live Once” which was tracked at Headgear and engineered by former Headgear intern, Colin Alexander.  Colin’s the electronics maestro in Unsolved Mysteries and he releases his own original music under the name Tiny Specks of Many Things.

Also, featured in Skins episode 107, is the MANY COLORS song “Peaks and Valleys”.  Many Colors is Jackie Lin Werner, otherwise known as Headgear’s studio manager.  “Peaks and Valleys” was mixed by engineer Nick Smeraski, another Headgear alum.

Oh shoot!  I almost forgot to mention that the KEEPAWAY song “Evil Lady” was featured on episode 106 of Skins.  Keepaway tracked that song with Headgear’s Kyle Boyd for their Baby Style EP.

It’s awesome that your work will be heard by more people!  Keep it going!
